Something is strange about music
You can hear a song in a language you don’t understand and still feel something. You can hear a melody you’ve never encoutered before and somehow recognize the emotion within it.
No explanation required.
Music doesn’t always tell us what to feel.
It gives us a place to feel it.
A song can make you
remember someone you’ve forgotten you remembered

The nostalgia of a song
A few notes can bring you back to a particular room, a particular summer, a particular version of yourself.
Sometimes you don’t even know why.
And perhaps that’s what makes music so universal. It doesn’t need to describe an experience for us to recognize it.
Longing sounds like longing.
Joy sounds like joy.
Grief, excitement, loneliness, anticipation — somehow, we understand
Feeling the music
We spend so much of our lives trying to put feelings into words.
Music gives us another option.
It can say something without defining it. It can hold two contradictory feelings at once. It can be sad without making us sad, or nostalgic for something we've never experienced.
Perhaps that's why we return to the same songs.
Not because they have changed.
Because we have.
The song stays the same.
We don't
